WHAT is the digital switchover?

The digital TV switchover is the process of turning off the UK's analogue TV signal and replacing it with a digital signal.
Why is it happening?
The digital TV switchover is Government policy. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial (Freeview). Digital TV also uses less broadcast space which means that after switchover, there will be more room for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV). To keep your TV service, you will need to convert your TVs to digital before your area’s switchover date.

Furthermore, Freesat will provide super fast digital text and enhanced digital interactivity, with access to the latest local, national and world news, and even live sports results and the local weather! To help you make the most of what you want to watch, the new Freesat digital satellite system will have a built in TV programming guide, providing you with up to date listings of when your favourite tv shows are on. There will also be digital subtitles and audio description available.
When is the digital switchover?
The UK digital switchover takes place at different stages across the country. When you switch depends on which transmitter group you are watching. The map on the right shows when the different areas will be switching over. Freeview is a Digital TV service that allows you to watch extra channels via your TV aerial. You don't need a dish, and there's no subscription - all you need is a Freeview set-top box.
